I had read the book “Nights in Rodanthe” and in my internet searches, I found out that they actually used a house in Rodanthe called “Serendipity” as the exterior shots of the inn from the movie. My mom also mentioned that the last hurricane had hurt the house and that the beach was washing out from underneath it, thus making the house have no support and soon to fall into the ocean. So I wanted to see it. I wanted to see this beautiful house that almost is it’s own character in the movie. It is gorgeous in pictures, so I thought it would be a fun day trip at some point for us to take while down visiting my mom. Well, since we usually do a quick visit, over a longish type weekend, we never really got around to it, until this July when I was finally able to talk our friends from Atlanta into taking a day trip out there with me! ((I love love having friends that go along with my kooky ideas!)) ((plus it helps that A is a picture taker like me, so a good photo opp is a good photo opp in her book and also (I think) that she is also a bit of a romantic like me, so she too wanted to see the house.))
So into the car we go, all we have to go on is that it is on Highway 12, the main road somewhere in Rodanthe. So we are driving down the road and out of nowhere comes this house. And I say, I think that’s it..And everyone is like, no way, we JUST hit Rodanthe 1 second ago. I do a quick internet search while B our fearless driver quickly pulls over (thanks for fast thinking B!) and yes, I find the pic online, and yes that is the house. A and I leap from the car and run to the house to take some pictures of it.
It is an amazing house. I would have loves to see the interior or watch the ocean from the decks, I can see having family fun in this house. It was just made to make memories at the beach.
You can see what’s happening to the house, here:

For whatever reason, this house has captured my imagination. It is a beautiful house made for vacation living – like so many in the Outer Banks. it just seems so sad to let such a beautiful house be reclaimed by the water, but I guess that is just the way it is on the beach!
For comparison, I snapped some pics of the house in the movie…
You can see the house was all dressed up for the movie – bright blue shutters and extra decking. Still beautiful dressed up or down.
Anyway, it made for a fun day trip and adventure with some great friends!
