If you haven’t seen this movie yet, then go rent it now! Everyone on the planet needs to see it. Hopefully, every science teacher is showing it to his/her students. Laurie and I have wanted to see it for awhile now and finally, after having it sit around in our house for more than a month, we watched it. Wow! Besides the environmental aspects of the film, which should be more than enough reason to watch it, you get a brief look into the life of Al Gore. I never knew he had been working this hard on this issue for so long. I thought it was a recent thing for him after he lost his bid for the presidency, but he’s been at it most of his adult life. I’m sure there are some (there always are) who would argue about some of the data presented in the film, but you cannot discount all of it or even most of it. Everyone, including our government, needs to face the fact that Global Warming IS an issue. We need to be educated about it and we need to take action now, not tomorrow. Do your part and start by renting, buying, or borrowing a copy of An Inconvenient Truth. It’s worth your time and I think you’ll be glad you did.
Great!!! My brother is a hippie now!
He won’t be growing his hair long, tho!
Seriously, it is a scary thing this film presents. Some of the data that he presents is stuff that is happening is HIS (Gore’s) lifetime, and if it can happen that fast – it is def. worth all of us thinking about it.
This website: http://www.climatecrisis.net/ gives you ways you can lower your CO2 emissions, too!
lol I don’t think I’ve reached hippie status yet, but I do think it’s an important issue that needs addressed.
I beg to differ with you on this issue. For all the data that states there IS global warming, there’s just as much data stating that there ISN’T global warming. Remember, about 30 years ago, scientists were talking about global cooling. The main concern here is the funding issue. These days, no data is pure. One side or the other wants to make sure that they continue to get funding and the data that gets published is going to lean the way that the dollars are. Whether you believe in gw or not, that’s not the point. What is the point is that we get more involved in what is going on than letting people that we elect make decisions that we blindly accept.
“For all the data that states there IS global warming, there’s just as much data stating that there ISN’T global warming.”
But there’s not. That’s a common misconception. If you actually look at the scientific articles out there, it isn’t like this at all. They point towards global warming. Now, the popular articles in newspapers and magazines do say there is controversy on the subject, but not scientific peer reviews journals. Who do we trust here, scientists or popular journalists?
Here to stir up more controversy. Maybe the end of the world is coming? “The sky is falling, the sky is falling” – Chicken Little. Lala’s newest and most favorite movie.
All I know is this Global Warming is freezing my butt off today!!!
*sigh* I should have known with this crowd. ;-P I guess I should have also said “climate change” instead of “global warming” since that is a more accurate description of the problem. Mostly, this was just an effort to try and get a few more people to watch the film with an open mind. I just thought people might benefit from it.
The film really does speak for itself and make you think about what is going on in the world today – it also gives a good picture of what will happen if we continue on the same path. I want to watch it again. It makes me worried for my kids and my kids kids and what kind of earth they will be inheriting – whether you believe in global warming or climate change or not.
The American Institute of Physics commissioned Spencer Weart to write a history of global warming; it’s available online in an extremely hyperlinked form, and was published as a 200-odd page book, The Discovery of Global Warming. If you’re skeptical, I strongly suggest reading the book or browsing around the site.
For example, the idea of warming by CO2 is very old, first suggested in 1896. The discussion of temperature trends covers the unexpectedly cool 1960s and 1970s, which led to the suggestions of global cooling; but these decades turned out to be anomalies. It’s a messy story, but there’s clear convergence on an answer — the trend toward warming became definite in the 1980s.
Climate Change is correct – I agree we do have to be concerned, but I think they are far greater things in this world that need to be considered at this time. Anyway, you’ve got to say this thread does tend to spark a bit of talking.
Can’t we all just be friends? *sigh* I miss you guys. How about you post something with little C in it? I sure miss him too.
okay…this reminds me of college with JD and Blake – there’s was always something that at least one member of the “family” didn’t, couldn’t, or wouldn’t agree on with everyone else. I guess some things just don’t change.
well then i guess it is a good thing that i just enjoy reading the comments and not posting them. if i start my comentary then we will have to open a new webpage just to cover this topic. well done JD, Laurie, and even you too LJ for trying to get your points across. We just need to keep an open mind and make the decisions on our own.
peace everybody
I know that there are important things to worry about, but I want to worry about the earth – I want one available for my kids and their kids and their kids’ kids to have – if there is no earth – there is NOTHING else to worry about. Sorry had to point it out.
Well, after seeing the controversy over this topic, I decided to go check it out. The movie is definitely eye-opening. I have to agree with Laurie…. I want one (earth) available for my kids and their kids and their kids’ kids to have
Thanks for opening my eyes on this one. J.D.
Everyone should at least see this movie.
