So too early to start talking about Christmas? People, according to Martha’s checklist, we need to have stuff done by now. So come on!!! Get with me. Seriously kidding. I won’t have time to do even 1/4 of the items listed on that list – even if I wanted to. But I do want to slow down this holiday season and try to enjoy it more and not feel so rushed and commercialized. I just want to have fun with a two-year old that sees all the potential and fun of the holiday season now, and I want to see it with him. So that being said, I created this:

I know you are asking what is this??
Well this is my countdown basket, one envelope for each day for something we can do with C during the holiday season.

I got this idea from Kiddley who has wonderful Advent calendar ideas, as well as, fabulous craft ideas year around. I modified my list a bit to be a bit more geared to a two-year old and as we “work” through the list I’ll tell you what we’re doing, and if it works with a child this age. I hope what I am starting is traditions we can do in the future, as well as, stuff he will remember as he grows older.
So what are your plans for the holiday season? What ways do you plan to make it special for yourself or with family and friends? What traditions MUST you follow or that you would like to start? I’ll tell you a tradition that I’d like to see end – the watching of A Christmas Story…We seem to watch it on TBS every year. But it looks like this movie has a cult following – so it’s not likely to end anytime soon for me! Your turn!
What a really cute idea. We have no traditions at the moment, other than getting our tree the day after Thanksgiving (real original there!) and opening one gift on Christmas Eve. I wish I had the gumption to do something like what you are doing though. I can’t wait to hear how it goes over.
Come on! A Christmas Story is a classic. You’ll shoot your eye out kid!
A Christmas Story is a classic: What about sticking your tongue to a flagpole or the new lamp in the window? hehe
I like your idea with the basket of envelopes- very creative! We do a countdown to Christmas but that sounds so much more fun!
Christmas Eve is a big deal at our house with tradition: we bake sugar cookies, take early baths, decorate the cookies with colored frosting and sprinkles, eat a couple of them and drink hot chocolate while I read “Twas the Night Before Christmas” (given to us by my daughter’s godmother), then set out a plate with cookies and a cup of Coca-cola for Santa.
We’ve been doing this for almost 10 years now and the kids look forward to it every year!
Well, it’s my year to host the family Christmas party, so it will be absolute mayhem on the 23rd at my house. The biggest tradition in our family is the setting of the Nativity scene ( that went on the mantel in the old house, but now goes on the entertainment center). The set is White Bisque Porcelain and my mother bought it many years ago. As we take out each piece, we retell the 1st Christmas story. Nothing else in the house has been decorated or taken out of the boxes – this is truly the 1st thing that we do. The other thing that we do is attend the Christmas Eve service at our church. While we are there for nearly every service throughout the year – there’s just something about a candlelit service. If my church didn’t do this, I would probably go to a Christmas Eve Latin Mass – just for the sentiment.
Now as far as movies go…”A Christmas Story” is truly great, but the one we watch every year is “Rudolph and the Island of Misfit Toys”.
