Every now and then, I come across a piece of software that I really enjoy using. SubEthaEdit is one of these. They just released a new version today and I figured I’d take this opportunity to give them a shout out. SubEthaEdit is a collaborative text editor for the Mac. (Sorry Windows folks.) I personally do not use the collaborative aspect of the program at all, but would if I ever had the need as I’ve heard great things about it. I first started using it about a year and a half ago to edit html and css documents at work as a replacement for BBEdit. BBEdit is much more expensive and I’ve never needed all the bells and whistles that it offered. Now I also use SubEthaEdit at home for editing the templates for this site and any python programming I do. One huge draw for me is that it has built in customizable syntax highlighting for several programming languages, which is expandable with several user contributed modes. With BBEdit, and some other editors, you cannot customize the syntax highlighting on a per language basis, i.e., a comment in a python script would be styled the same as a comment in an html document. Some people probably prefer this, but I like the flexibility of SubEthaEdit. I could sit here and list all the great things about SubEthaEdit, but figure I’ll let you see for yourself. You can download and try it out for free so give it a go.
